Ergonomics in manufacturing and production is sometimes seen as a big expense. This is, however, not true, especially not in the long run. Ergonomic solutions don´t have to be expensive. Furthermore, the positive effects with ergonomic practices on productivity and health are very large. A good working environment also leads to reduced absence due to illness or injuries.
An ergonomic industrial workplace
When designing a new workstation, the guiding principle should always be to adapt the working environment to fit the individual, rather than forcing the person to adjust to existing conditions. Proper working posture and a well-organized workspace are details that play a big a significant role in long-term health. With today's flexible design options, it is possible to create an ergonomic and cost-effective workstation, regardless of whether you work in a production or office environment.

3 guidelines for an ergonomic workstation
-
AdaptabilityThe possibility to make individual adjustments on the workstation is everything. Worktables and chairs must be height adjustable for different people and tasks. Adjustable footrests also help to create an optimal working position. When the tasks allow, it is good to try to alternate between standing and sitting positions throughout the day.An assembly cart or workshop trolley on wheels is easy to move, if, for example, tools or other equipment are needed in another place or perhaps at another machine. Movable parts of the workstation increase flexibility and enable a more ergonomic workplace.
-
PlacementMaterials and tools that are used regularly must be placed easily accessible, so that strenuous movements and working positions are avoided. Material that is located further away must be accessible without straining the body in a harmful way, e.g. through adjustable aids such as movable arms or movable shelves.
Avoid unnecessary lifting, use aids such as material lifts, to lift and lower heavier loads. To move heavy loads, use a cart or something similar. -
LightingSufficient light is important. Lighting levels in warehouses, at production lines and assembly facilities should preferably be better than the standard requirements. However, it is not enough to have high lighting values alone. Lighting must also be even and the lighting standard specifies minimum values for uniformity. In high-quality industrial lighting, special attention is paid to glare control. Closer to the body, adjustable lighting is suitable, so that you can adjust the appropriate lighting level yourself depending on the prevailing circumstances.
